Nevada Handicap Placards in Plain Terms

Nevada handicap placard application being filed at a Smog Busters hut window in Las Vegas

Applying for a handicap placard in Nevada is simpler than most people expect. A Nevada handicap placard lets you park in spaces reserved for drivers with mobility disabilities. The Nevada DMV issues them based on a medical certification from your doctor. The form is called the SP-27 (Application for Special License Plate, Placard, or Sticker). Your doctor fills out the medical section, you fill out the applicant section, and we file it at the DMV for you.

Nevada issues two main placard types. A permanent placard is purple, covers long-term mobility disabilities, and is good for four years before it needs renewing. A temporary placard is red, covers shorter-term conditions like recovery from surgery, and is valid for up to six months. Your doctor indicates which one applies on the SP-27 form.

If your disability is permanent and you’d prefer disability license plates on your vehicle instead of a hanging placard, that’s a separate Nevada DMV process. We can file that too. Just ask at the hut.

What You Need to File for a Handicap Placard in Nevada

Nevada won’t process the placard without a complete SP-27 form and valid photo ID. Before you head to the hut, gather these:

  • The SP-27 form with your doctor’s signature. This is the single most important item. The doctor’s medical certification section has to be completed and signed. Without it, we can’t file. You can get the SP-27 from your doctor’s office, download it from the Nevada DMV website and bring it to your appointment, or stop by one of our huts and pick one up.
  • Your Nevada driver’s license or state ID. Photo ID is required to prove you’re the applicant.
  • Your current Nevada registration, if applicable. Helps speed things up but not required for a placard that stays with you rather than with a vehicle.
  • Payment for DMV fees and our service fee. Nevada generally does not charge for the placard itself, but there’s a service charge for the filing. Call us for a current quote.
We cannot sign the medical section for you. That section is for your licensed doctor only. Nevada verifies the signature with the doctor’s license information. Bring the form back signed before we can submit.

How the Visit Goes at the Hut

Pull up to any Smog Busters hut during business hours. We want this to be easy, especially if the reason you need the placard is making mobility harder right now.

  • Review the form (a couple of minutes). We check that the doctor’s section is complete and signed, and that the applicant section matches your ID.
  • Paperwork (about 15 minutes). We fill in anything that’s missing on the applicant side and collect fees.
  • Submission. Our DMV team submits your paperwork to the Nevada DMV through our authorized third-party DMV services provider channel. Standard turnaround is 7 to 10 business days.
  • Pickup. The placard comes back to the same hut where you filed. We call you when it’s in. Bring your ID for pickup, or we can release it to an authorized family member if you can’t make it back easily. Ask us how to set that up.
Driver stays in the car if mobility is an issue. We walk out to your driver’s window and handle everything there. You don’t have to get out of the vehicle. If a family member or caregiver is helping you, they can bring the paperwork to the hut on your behalf, but you’ll need to sign the applicant section yourself.

Permanent vs Temporary Placard

Your doctor decides which placard fits your situation. Here’s what each one is:

  • Permanent placard (purple). For mobility disabilities expected to last long-term. Valid for four years. Renewable through the Nevada DMV when it expires. Your doctor indicates this option on the SP-27.
  • Temporary placard (red). For short-term conditions like post-surgical recovery, a broken leg, or a limited-duration medical issue. Valid for up to six months based on what your doctor specifies. Not renewable by itself. If you need more time, your doctor signs a new SP-27.
  • Disability license plates (wheelchair plate). Separate from the hanging placard. Permanent plates that stay on a specific vehicle. Requires the same doctor-signed SP-27 plus vehicle-specific paperwork. File both at the same visit if that’s what your doctor recommended.

Renewing or Replacing a Placard

Permanent placards expire every four years. Nevada mails a renewal reminder before the expiration date. Renewal does NOT require a new doctor’s signature in most cases. You can file the renewal paperwork at our hut just like the original filing.

Lost or damaged placards can be replaced. Walk in with your photo ID, we pull up your record, and file a replacement. No new doctor’s form needed if your current placard is still within the valid period.

If your temporary placard expires and your condition is still ongoing, your doctor needs to sign a new SP-27. We can’t extend a temporary placard without a fresh medical signature.

Moving to Nevada with an out-of-state handicap placard? Nevada generally honors valid out-of-state placards for visitors, but if you’ve become a Nevada resident, you need to apply for a Nevada placard. Bring your current out-of-state placard and your new Nevada ID, and we’ll help you file the Nevada application.

Why Smog Busters Instead of the DMV

The Nevada DMV can file your placard paperwork. They’re just slow, and their offices aren’t always set up for drivers with mobility issues. Parking can be far from the entrance. Lines can be long. Limited hours.

We file the same paperwork in about 15 minutes at any of 32 huts across the valley. We come to your driver’s window. No need to leave the car. No line. No appointment. Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday 8am to 4pm.

Family-owned since 1988. Nevada DMV paperwork is our day job. We’ve filed thousands of placard applications for Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas residents.

Other DMV Services We Can Handle

If you’re already here, we can usually knock out other DMV paperwork the same visit:

Heads up: The placard comes back to the same hut where you filed, typically in a couple of weeks. We call you when it arrives. Only renewal stickers and personalized plates are mailed directly to your home by the Nevada DMV.

Placard Filing Across the Valley

Common Questions

Nevada Handicap Placard FAQ

Do I need to see my doctor first?
Yes. The SP-27 form requires your doctor to complete and sign the medical certification section before we can file. We cannot sign it for you. Once your doctor signs it, bring the form to any of our huts and we file the DMV portion.
How long until my placard is ready?
The placard typically returns to the hut within a couple of weeks of filing. We call you when it arrives and you pick it up at the same location where you filed.
Can someone else bring the paperwork for me?
A family member or caregiver can bring the completed SP-27 and your ID to the hut to submit the paperwork. You still need to personally sign the applicant section of the form. If mobility is a barrier, call us at (702) 436-5346 and we’ll work something out.
What’s the difference between the purple and red placards?
Purple is for permanent mobility disabilities and is valid for four years before renewal. Red is for temporary conditions and is valid for up to six months. Your doctor indicates which one applies on the SP-27 form.
How do I renew my Nevada handicap placard?
Permanent placards renew every four years. The Nevada DMV sends a renewal reminder before the expiration date. Most renewals don’t require a new doctor’s signature. Walk into any hut with your current placard and your ID and we file the renewal for you.
What does it cost to file?
Nevada generally doesn’t charge for the placard itself. There’s a service charge for the filing work. Call (702) 436-5346 for a current quote.
My placard was stolen. What do I do?
File a police report for your records, then walk into any hut with your ID and we file a replacement. No new doctor’s form needed if your current placard is still within the valid period.
