What a Salvage Title Is

Owner arriving with a rebuilt vehicle at the Smog Busters E Sahara corporate location for a salvage title inspection

A salvage title means an insurance company declared your vehicle a total loss. This usually happens after a serious accident, flood, theft recovery, or other major damage. The insurance company paid out the claim and took ownership of the vehicle, or the owner kept the vehicle but the title was branded as “salvage” by the state.

A salvage-titled vehicle cannot be registered or driven on public roads in Nevada. It stays off the road until the vehicle is repaired, inspected, and the DMV issues a new title branded as “rebuilt.” That rebuilt title is what lets you register the vehicle and drive it legally again.

The rebuilt title stays with the vehicle for life. It tells future buyers the car was once totaled and then restored. Many Las Vegas drivers buy salvage vehicles intentionally because the price is significantly lower than a clean-title vehicle of the same year and model. If you did the work right and the inspection checks out, you end up with a legal, drivable vehicle at a fraction of the cost.

The Salvage-to-Rebuilt Title Process

Here is how it works from start to finish:

What to Bring

Have everything ready before you tow the vehicle to E Sahara:

  • The salvage title. The physical title document showing the salvage brand. Must be in your name or accompanied by a signed title transfer.
  • Proof of all repairs. Receipts, invoices, and parts records for every repair made to the vehicle. Include both parts and labor documentation.
  • Your Nevada driver’s license or state-issued photo ID. Required for all DMV transactions.
  • Proof of Nevada insurance. The vehicle must be insured in Nevada before the rebuilt title can be issued.
  • Payment for DMV fees and our service fee. Call us for a current quote.
Repair documentation matters. The more detailed your repair records are, the smoother the inspection goes. Keep receipts for every part, even small items like bolts and clips. If you did the work yourself, document it with photos and parts receipts. The inspector wants to see that the vehicle was properly restored.

VIN Inspection Details

Smog Busters inspector reviewing a rebuilt vehicle for a Nevada salvage title inspection

The VIN inspection for salvage titles is performed by the Nevada DMV — not by Smog Busters. This is a legal requirement specific to salvage-branded vehicles and an extra precaution the state requires before issuing a rebuilt title.

During the inspection, a DMV inspector verifies the vehicle identification number matches the title, checks that the vehicle has been properly repaired, and confirms it meets Nevada safety standards. The vehicle must be physically present. We help you prepare your documentation so nothing gets rejected.

If you are coming from Summerlin, Henderson, Spring Valley, or North Las Vegas, plan your tow route to E Sahara Ave near Maryland Parkway. Call ahead at (702) 436-5346 so we can let you know what to expect and confirm availability.

Can I Drive a Salvage-Titled Vehicle?

No. A vehicle with a salvage title cannot legally be driven on public roads in Nevada. The vehicle is not registered, and driving it can result in fines, impoundment, and insurance problems.

The vehicle must be towed or trailered to the inspection location — it cannot be driven there. After the rebuilt title is issued and you register the vehicle, then you can drive it. Not before.

We know it is tempting to just drive it over, especially if the car runs fine. But if you get pulled over in a salvage-titled vehicle, you are looking at a citation at minimum and potential impoundment. It is not worth the risk when the finish line is this close.
