How to Register a Vehicle in Las Vegas

New car owner pulling up at a Smog Busters hut to handle Nevada vehicle registration

There are a few different reasons you might need to register a vehicle in Nevada. The process and paperwork depend on how you got the car.

  • Private party purchase. You bought a car directly from another person. This is the most common scenario we see at the hut.
  • Dealer purchase. You bought from a dealership and need to complete the registration yourself (some dealers handle this, some don’t).
  • Out-of-state vehicle. You moved to Nevada or bought a car in another state and need to register it here.
  • Gifted or inherited vehicle. Someone gave you a car or you received one through an estate. You still need to register it in your name.
  • Previously unregistered vehicle. The registration lapsed or the vehicle was never registered in Nevada.

No matter which category fits your situation, you can walk into any Smog Busters hut and we will walk you through exactly what you need. If a smog check is required, we handle it on the same visit.

Private Party Purchase

Buying a car from another person is the most common registration we process at Smog Busters. Nevada gives you 30 days from the date of purchase to register the vehicle in your name. There is also a 3-day grace period built into Nevada law, but the clock starts ticking on the day you buy the car.

The most important document is the signed title. The seller has to sign the title over to you, and the signature has to match the name printed on the title exactly. No corrections, no white-out, no crossing out and re-signing. If the title has any alterations, the DMV will reject it and you will need a corrected title from the seller.

For vehicles under 10 years old, you also need an odometer disclosure. This is usually a section on the title itself, but if it is on a separate form, make sure it is filled out and signed by the seller.

What to bring for a private party purchase:

  • Signed title from the seller (signatures exactly as the name appears, no corrections)
  • Nevada-licensed insurance (out-of-state insurance is not accepted)
  • Your photo ID (Nevada driver’s license or state ID)
  • Payment for DMV fees and service fee (call for a quote)
  • Odometer disclosure (for vehicles under 10 years old)
All documents must be originals. Nevada does not accept photocopies or digital copies of the title. If you lost the title, the seller may need to apply for a duplicate title before you can register.

Dealer Purchase

If you bought your vehicle from a dealership, the dealer should have given you either an EDRS (Electronic Dealer Reporting System) form or an MSO (Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin) for a brand-new vehicle. Some dealers complete the registration for you as part of the sale. Others hand you the paperwork and send you on your way.

If the dealer did not complete the registration, bring the following to any Smog Busters hut:

  • EDRS form or MSO (provided by the dealer)
  • Nevada-licensed insurance (out-of-state policies are not accepted)
  • Your photo ID
  • Payment for DMV fees and service fee

If the dealer gave you a temporary tag, check the expiration date. You want to get your permanent registration filed before that tag expires.

What to Bring

The exact documents depend on your situation, but here is the full list. Bring everything that applies:

  • Signed title (private party) or EDRS/MSO (dealer purchase)
  • Current out-of-state title or lienholder info (if registering from another state)
  • Nevada-licensed insurance. This is required. Out-of-state insurance is not accepted, even if it covers Nevada.
  • Photo ID. Nevada driver’s license or state-issued ID.
  • Odometer disclosure (for private party vehicles under 10 years old)
  • Payment for DMV fees and our service fee. Call (702) 436-5346 for a current quote.
Every document must be an original. No photocopies, no screenshots, no digital copies. The title must be signed exactly as the owner’s name appears on the front. No white-out, no corrections. If anything looks off, the state will reject the paperwork and you will have to come back.

How It Works at the Hut

Pull up to any Smog Busters hut during business hours. No appointment needed. Here is what happens:

  • Document check. We look over your title, insurance, and ID to make sure everything is in order before we start.
  • Smog check (if required). Most vehicles need a passing smog test before registration. We run it right there at the hut.
  • Paperwork. We fill out the registration forms, enter your vehicle info, and collect fees. The whole process takes about 20 minutes.
  • Submission. We submit your paperwork to the Nevada DMV through our authorized agent channel.
  • Pickup. Your plates and registration come back to the same hut where you filed. Standard turnaround is 7 to 10 business days. We also offer 2-day and 4-day expedited processing. We call you when everything is ready.
Plates come back to the hut. Your plates and registration are returned to the same location where you filed. We do not mail them. When they arrive, we call you and you pick them up at the hut. The one exception is personalized plates, which are mailed directly to you by the DMV.

Why Smog Busters Instead of the DMV

The Nevada DMV handles vehicle registration at their offices. You book an appointment, drive across town, wait your turn, and hand the same paperwork to a state worker. It works, but it takes most of a morning.

We complete your paperwork in about 20 minutes and submit it to the DMV on your behalf. Standard processing is 7 to 10 business days. No DMV office visit needed. 32 locations across the valley, open six days a week.

Smog check on the same visit. If your vehicle needs a smog test before registration, we run it at the hut. One stop instead of two.

Family-owned since 1988. We have handled thousands of vehicle registrations for Las Vegas drivers. Our team knows the paperwork inside and out.

Common Questions

Car Registration FAQ

How long do I have to register a vehicle I just bought?
For private party purchases, Nevada gives you 30 days from the date of sale to register the vehicle. There is also a 3-day grace period. Dealer purchases may come with a temporary tag that has its own expiration date.
Can I use my out-of-state insurance to register in Nevada?
No. Nevada requires a Nevada-licensed insurance policy for vehicle registration. Even if your current policy covers Nevada, you will need to get a policy from a company licensed in Nevada before you can register.
Do I need a smog check to register my vehicle?
Most vehicles need a passing smog check before registration. There are some exemptions (brand-new vehicles, electric vehicles, and certain others). We can tell you at the hut whether yours needs one, and if it does, we run the smog on-site before filing the registration.
How long does the registration process take?
Paperwork at the hut takes about 20 minutes. If you also need a smog check, add a few more minutes. After we submit, your plates and registration come back to the hut in 7 to 10 business days. We also offer 2-day and 4-day expedited processing.
What if the title has white-out or corrections on it?
The DMV will reject a title with white-out, cross-outs, or corrections. The seller will need to apply for a duplicate title before you can use it to register the vehicle.
Where do I pick up my plates?
Your plates and registration are returned to the same Smog Busters hut where you filed the paperwork. We call you when they are ready for pickup. Standard turnaround is 7 to 10 business days, with 2-day and 4-day expedited options available.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk into any of our 32 locations Monday through Saturday. Appointments are optional but save $10 on our full DMV service fee.* *$10 analyzer renewals not included in appointment discount.
