Yes, in most cases. Clark County requires annual emissions testing for most registered vehicles. Your DMV renewal notice will indicate whether testing is required. Some vehicles are exempt based on age, fuel type, or model year. If you are not sure, bring it in.
How long does a smog check take? +
Most smog checks at Smog Busters are done in about 15 minutes. Your technician connects your vehicle to a state-certified emissions analyzer, runs the test, and submits the results electronically to the Nevada DMV when it is complete. You can handle your registration renewal in the same visit.
Can I get a smog check without an appointment? +

What do I need to bring to a smog check? +
Just your vehicle. If you have your DMV renewal notice, bring that too — you do not need to schedule anything in advance. If you are handling your registration renewal at the same time, bring your payment method. If your renewal notice was lost in the mail or misplaced, no problem — we can look up your vehicle using your VIN number.
How often do I need a smog check in Nevada? +
Clark County requires annual emissions testing for most registered vehicles. Your DMV renewal notice will indicate whether testing is required. Some vehicles are exempt based on age, fuel type, or model year.
Are electric vehicles exempt from smog checks in Nevada? +

What Happens If You Fail

A failed smog test is not the end of the road. Here is what to expect and what your options are in Nevada.

Nevada Smog Free Clark County Program: If your vehicle fails and repairs are needed, you may qualify for up to $975 in repair assistance through the state-sponsored program. Ask your technician for information.
What happens if my car fails the smog test? +
If your vehicle does not pass, you receive an official Nevada Vehicle Inspection Report that details the results. You cannot renew your registration until the vehicle passes. Smog Busters offers diagnosis and repair at select 2G-certified locations. You may also qualify for the Nevada Smog Free Clark County program, which provides up to $975 in repair assistance for eligible vehicles.

A 2G-certified smog station can perform both emissions testing and vehicle diagnosis and repair. Most Smog Busters locations are 1G stations, meaning testing only. At a 2G-certified location, technicians can identify why your vehicle failed and perform the repairs needed to get it to pass.
Does Smog Busters offer free retests? +
No. Smog Busters does not offer free retests. After repairs are made, a retest is required and standard fees apply. If cost is a concern, ask about the Nevada Smog Free Clark County program, which may cover repair and retest costs for eligible vehicles.
Can my 1G Smog Busters location tell me why my car failed? +
At 1G locations (most Smog Busters stations), technicians test the vehicle as presented and submit the results. They cannot diagnose the cause of a failure or advise on repairs.
